Cumulative lateral position: a new measure for driver performance in curves

Vehicle control can be described with lateral and longitudinal measures. The Standard Deviation of Lateral Position (SDLP) is probably the most common measure to reflect control. Indices such as mean (MLP) Time-to-Line Crossing (TLC) have also been used describe driver behaviour. Even though all these measures demonstrated their value, in some specific cases, may indicate that behaviour deteriorated while not necessarily case. When negotiating curves for example, drivers prefer follow centre lane. We propose a new index, called Cumulative (CLP), an index does suffer from drawbacks earlier mentioned conditions. applied CLP practical In simulator experiment negotiated three types curves: traditional circular (CIR), clothoid (CLO), curve, polynomial curve continuous curvature (CON). Results show unlike older measures, able well summarise trajectory on road sensitive distinguishing different driving respect variations geometry, even cases where differences are small. proposed methodology evaluate both existing roads design solutions, showed this was safest curve.
